The word ‘cossack’ comes from ‘free man’ in one of the Turkic languages.

The cossacks were militarized people living mostly in the steppes region of Eastern Europe including the eastern lands of modern Ukraine. In the period from the 13th to 18th centuries, the cossack organizations were to a great degree a state within a state under changing suzerainty.

Their modern image combines the love for freedom and democracy, war skills, and bravery.
